Massachusetts casino revenue saw a bit of a drop in November. Although the drop may seem minor, the decline may also indicate a downward trend in the industry.

Massachusetts’ three casinos combined for $94 million in gross gaming revenue in November. That’s the second-lowest monthly revenue total of 2023. The lowest came in September, a month handicapped by a cyberattack on MGM resorts that impacted several of the company’s casino properties, including MGM Springfield.

The three locations produced over $26.2 million in tax revenue for the Commonwealth. Massachusetts online casinos would generate much more tax revenue, but those haven’t been legalized yet.

Encore Boston Harbor remains highest-grossing casino in Massachusetts

Massachusetts residents are still frequenting Encore Boston Harbor to get their gambling fix. In November, the casino generated over $61.4 million in gross gaming revenue. That’s a 1.5% decrease from October. However, it is still nearly double what MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park brought in put together.

Plainridge Park$11,600,410$11,600,410N/A$5,684,200
Total$94,030,524$61,951,510$32,079,014$26,291,729

Taxed at 25%, Encore Boston Harbor paid $15.3 million in taxes in November. Unlike most casinos, table games are almost as popular as slots at Encore. In November, the venue won $27.8 million from bettors on table games and $33.5 million on slots.

MGM Springfield’s November revenue came out to $20.9 million. Plainridge Park followed at $11.6 million. Plainridge Park is the state’s only Category 2 slots-only facility. With no table games, the venue is expected to be lower on the MA casino revenue tracker compared to the competition.

MA casino revenue up year-over-year

While November casino revenue numbers are hovering around the lowest they’ve been in 2023, the industry is actually seeing some growth compared to this time last year.

November’s casino revenue increased slightly compared to November 2022’s $59.4 million. November 2023 saw a $2 million higher gross gaming revenue than last year. That’s a year-over-year increase of 3.3%.

November 2023 is also the highest-grossing November in the last five years. So, while things may seem bleak for the casino industry when you only look at the 2023 data, the year-over-year numbers tell a more positive story.
