Massachusetts Online Legal Slots

Massachusetts legalized slot machines in 2011. Today, there are more than 6,400 slots available in the three casinos in Massachusetts.

The state has not legalized online slot games outright just yet. However, the many social casino options that are available can provide legal slots games that are similar to the real-money options.

In some cases you can even win cash prizes through them.

So, if you are a slots player in Massachusetts, this page is for you. We will walk you through all of the Massachusetts online legal slots options out there.

Best Massachusetts Legal Online Slots Casinos

Is It Legal to Play Online Slots in Massachusetts?

Not exactly. There is no provision under Massachusetts gambling law that would allow or disallow online slots for real money specifically. Some gambling sites might say that the lack of a law means that online slot machines are legal to play in Massachusetts and, as a result, the numerous casinos available through a web search are OK to offer their slot games to you.

We take a different approach. If an activity is not specifically legal under state law, that’s not good enough for us to recommend. Furthermore, the sites that are offering service to you are based outside the US and bear a host of concerns and problems for those who play from Massachusetts. So, for the most part, you cannot play slots online in Massachusetts.

The only exception is the one that we mentioned above. Social casinos are both legal and available to play in Massachusetts. Rather than use real money, these sites invite players to use virtual currencies to play their games — and specific types of that virtual currency are redeemable for cash prizes.

That allows some of them to offer the possibility of real money prizes without (technically) attaching a price tag — making them 100% legal in Massachusetts.

Here’s what you can find.

How to Play Online Slots in Massachusetts

Social casinos invite players to enjoy casino-style games for fun and entertainment. Among the available options, Pulsz Slots and Casino is a popular one with more than 300 slots titles to go along with a selection of table games.

Popular slots titles on Pulsz include Joker’s Jewels, Hot Triple Sevens Special and Black Wolf. The site additionally has a variety of Megaways slots games such as Curse of the WerewolfGreat Rhino and Big Bass Bonanza.

Meanwhile there are a variety of social slots sites available in Massachusetts. Some are better than others. We recommend four in particular:

The slots you find on these sites operate the same way as slots at a real-money online casino and, for that matter, physical slot machines in retail casinos. You put in your money, spin the reels, and hope that the symbols line up in certain configurations.

Obviously, there’s no physical reel to spin, but these MA online slots can be as beautifully and intricately rendered as any video slots elsewhere.

They also come in most of the formats that you’ve seen before. There are three-reel and five-reel games, although five-reel options are much more common. Some are simple reel games, but others come with bonus features on the screen, on a second screen, or in multimedia presentations.

You’ll find both straight payouts and progressive jackpots. If anything, progressive jackpots are even easier to find, since there’s no struggle to unify all players on the same server if everyone’s already online.

Here are some of the more prominent games that you can find at the social casinos we listed above:

  • Adventure Party — LuckyLand
  • Atlantis 10K Ways — LuckyLand
  • Better Wilds — Chumba
  • Blackbeard’s Fortune — Funzpoints
  • Buffalo Blitz II — Chumba
  • Cash Vault Hold ‘N’ Link — Funrize
  • Cupid’s Fortune — Chumba
  • Fishing Kingdom — Funrize
  • Gridiron Rush — Funzpoints
  • Here Money Money — LuckyLand
  • Hot Cash Hold ‘N’ Link — Funrize
  • Hypernova — Chumba
  • It’s Anyone’s Guess — Funzpoints
  • Jewel Burst — Funzpoints
  • Kraken’s Bounty — Chumba
  • Madame Tarot — LuckyLand
  • Snow Queen in 3D — LuckyLand
  • The Enchanted Forest — Funzpoints
  • Thunder Fishing — Funrize

This list is not exhaustive by any stretch. You can find dozens of games at each of these sites.

Massachusetts Online Legal Slots Apps

Of the social casino sites we mentioned above, Pulsz offers apps for both iOS and Android devices, and LuckyLand has an Android app. Chumba Casino has a lite version app on the Apple Store and Google Play Store, but we don’t recommend downloading it.

Instead, we suggest playing Chumba, and all other social casinos without an app, from your mobile browser. Each site is optimized to fit your screen size automatically. There should be no drop-off in the level of service between a phone, a tablet, or a laptop. Enter the web address for the site or click one of the links in the table above to visit them.

Progressive Jackpots in Massachusetts

As we mentioned, several social casinos offer progressive jackpot slots as part of their roster. These games work identically to progressive jackpot slots you’d find through real-money online casinos or at the retail casinos in Massachusetts themselves.

For those who don’t know, however, let’s do a quick refresher on how progressive jackpot slots work.

A progressive jackpot slot is identifiable by the increasing dollar amount that appears prominently on the game itself. The amount of money varies, but it generally offers outsized rewards for those who hit it. In some cases, hundreds of thousands or more than a million dollars can become yours through a single spin.

However, for the most part, your spins on these games are what fund the escalating jackpot. A portion of losing spins diverts into the kitty until someone wins.

These types of online casino slots usually pay out a bit less frequently because of this diversion. Since the site is taking a hit to its usual return by shuttling a portion of its gains into a player-won jackpot, it keeps an extra amount to compensate. With that said, someone has to win these payouts every so often, and it cannot be you unless you play.

Your chances are never going to be very good, but neither will anyone else’s — including whoever takes down the prize.

We have a partial list of social progressive jackpots below. When we list two slots together, it is to indicate that they share a common progressive jackpot. Unsurprisingly, these joint pools are typically larger than the ones for single slots:

  • Dr. Amazing — LuckyLand
  • Legendary Wins — LuckyLand
  • Neon Valley — LuckyLand
  • Pow Pow Lions — LuckyLand
  • Stallion Grand/Dancing Gold — Chumba
  • The Last Empress — Chumba
  • Vikings of the North — Chumba
  • Western Gold — Chumba
  • Wild Roads/Triple Fever — Chumba
  • Wild Winter — LuckyLand

Slots Rewards Programs in MA

Many online and retail casinos offer loyalty or rewards programs for their patrons, including slots players. The retail casinos in Massachusetts are no different. You can earn comps at Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield, and Plainridge Park Casino through their respective loyalty programs — Wynn Rewards, M life Rewards, and mychoice.

Unfortunately, the same is not true for social casinos in Massachusetts. In a sense, they already function like rewards programs, since it’s possible to play them for free for the potential to claim cash prizes.

However, if you’re looking for a program that offers comps for your slot play at a social casino, it’s going to be difficult to find. The best comparison would be the daily login bonuses offered at these social casino sites, where you’re given free game currency every day just for logging in.

Massachusetts Slot Machine Laws

The state laws governing slot machines in Massachusetts are similar to those in many other states.

What Massachusetts lawmakers prefer to do is issue a blanket ban on owning or using slot machines of any kind, then carve out exceptions to the law as they deem necessary. In other words, the default position of the law is that slot gambling is illegal, but there are some limited exceptions.

In Section 5A of Massachusetts general laws’ Part IV, Title I, slot machines are explicitly illegal according to the following:

“Whoever manufactures, transports sells, offers for sale, stores, displays, repairs, reconditions, possesses or uses any gambling device or parts for use therein shall be punished by a fine of not more than five thousand dollars.”

The only exception to this blanket ban is for antique slot machines. Anyone who can prove their machine is more than 30 years old can use the age of the machine as a defense against prosecution under this statute. Aside from this carve-out, slots are illegal in Massachusetts.

From this position, lawmakers wrote the Expanded Gaming Act in 2011 to create exceptions for the casinos that the new law allowed. The law divided Massachusetts into three regions and allowed each region to place a single resort casino inside one of its designated counties. Each casino could then offer full Class III gambling, including as many slot machines as could reasonably fit on the premises.

In addition, the law permitted a slots casino to offer slots play and electronic table games. This Class II casino could be located anywhere in the state rather than being limited to a single area.

So far, resort casinos have opened in the western (Region B) and central (Region A) sections of the state. MGM Springfield in Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor in Everett each offer thousands of slot machines. Additionally, the Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville is the slots casino mentioned above, and there are plenty of slots options there, too.

Massachusetts may not be finished adding slots locations, either. A casino may still open in Region C. However, there are legal and logistical issues that have caused ongoing delays in the southeastern portion of Massachusetts.

Below are the relevant details for playing slots at Massachusetts casinos.

Although various activities at these locations may have limited hours of operation, slot machines are not subject to any kind of restrictions and are available around the clock at all three locations.

Encore Boston Harbor has the largest footprint of any casino in Massachusetts and is the closest to Boston.
