Barstool’s popularity in Massachusetts

Massachusetts will be Barstool Sportsbook’s 16th state with legal operation. It serves as the company’s best chance for a top-four market share. Portnoy, Barstool’s founder, is from Massachusetts, and Barstool Sports is wildly popular in the Bay State.

Owned by PENN Entertainment, Barstool Sportsbook also has a retail sportsbook at Plainridge Park Casino. That facility opened when in-person sports betting launched in Massachusetts on Jan. 31. It reported the second-highest handle of Massachusetts’ three casinos sportsbooks that day.

Barstool Sportsbook Massachusetts is one of six apps launching in MA on Friday. The other five:

  • DraftKings Sportsbook
  • BetMGM
  • Caesars Sportsbook
  • FanDuel
  • WynnBET

Betr plans to launch in late March or April. Bally Bet and Fanatics Sportsbook will launch in May. And Betway expects to launch in January 2024. That’s 10 total sportsbook apps. Current state law allows for up to 15 online sports betting operators.

What is Barstool offering new customers?

Barstool Sportsbook new Massachusetts customers a first bet refund of up to $1,000 if that first bet loses. It is also new bettors two $50 bonus bets — one on the Boston Celtics to win the NBA Finals and one on the Boston Bruins to win the Stanley Cup — if they place a wager of $5 or more by March 17.

Winnings will be paid out in bonus cash, not cash that can be withdrawn.
