DraftKings airs new

It didn’t take long for DraftKings to play “the local card.” In a new ad for sports betting that debuted in Massachusetts Friday, the popular sportsbook stresses its Boston roots with comedian Lenny Clarke, former Red Sox hero David Ortiz and others.

Mobile sports betting debuted in Massachusetts on Friday morning, with DraftKings one of six sports betting operators available.

Comedian Clarke, a Boston native with a classic “BAH-STUN” accent who starred on the TV series Rescue Me, discusses the opportunity to create a “wicked smart parlay” in the 30-second commercial. He urges viewers to “support local.” At the tail end of the DraftKings Massachusetts ad, Ortiz sidles in to make an appearance.

The ad is dripping with Boston flavor: Clarke buys pastry at a local bakery, walks the Boston streets, where he’s joined by Brian Scalabrine and his iconic bright red hair, before making his way to “The T” to catch a train.

Home state advantage for DraftKings?

Founded in a Boston suburb in 2012, DraftKings has its national headquarters in the city. Since there’s plenty of DraftKings history here, it’s been speculated that Massachusetts will be kind to DraftKings, considering the loyalty of sports fans in the state. DraftKings is the second-leading sports betting app in the US with more than 20% of market share nationally.

Scalabrine adds to the local flavor of the operator and was involved in launch day marketing, posting his first bet on social media (he wagered on the Bruins).

But, there’s more than one hometown sportsbook in the market: Barstool Sports also has roots in Massachusetts.

However, the weight of DraftKings marketing campaigns and ambassadors like Ortiz makes it likely that smaller Barstool will be jostling for fourth place in the state.

DraftKings offers guaranteed winner promo in Massachusetts

To celebrate the launch of mobile sports betting in the state, DraftKings has welcomed Big Papi and his friends to share lots of great news.

That includes a pair of promo offers being called “no-brainer” bets.

If customers in Boston (or anywhere in Massachusetts) place any two bets up to $50 on the Denver Nuggets to hit a 3-pointer Friday AND the Celtics to score a point in their Saturday game, DraftKings doubles their money.
