With Tuesday’s drawing for the $1.05 billion Mega Millions jackpot just a day away, one state has the highest percentage of residents conducting Google searches related to Mega Millions.
And it’s Massachusetts.
According to Google Trends, Massachusetts has by far the highest rate of “megamillions tickets” Google searches in the country over the past seven days. The analysis tool assigns a number from 0 t0 100 based on the number of Google searches in the state compared to population.
For “megamillions tickets” searches, Massachusetts is a 100. Second-place Texas has a 39, and third-place California has a 21.
Massachusetts also has the second-highest rate of Google searches for “megamillions” and the sixth-highest rate of searches for “mega millions” over the past seven days.
Add those rankings together — first plus second plus sixth (1 + 2 + 6) — and that averages out to three. That’s the highest average ranking of all 50 US states. New Hampshire is close, but it didn’t even register enough “megamillions tickets” searches to appear on Google Trends for that search.
Popularity of the lottery in Massachusetts
The MA Lottery is wildly popular in the Bay State.
In addition to offering multi-state draw games Mega Millions and Powerball, the Massachusetts Lottery also has statewide draw games, including Mass Cash, The Numbers Game, Megabucks Doubler and All Or Nothing.
There’s also Keno and a myriad of instant-win games.
There is currently no online lottery in Massachusetts, but experts think it will only be a matter of time before that changes.
This would be the 6th-largest Mega Millions jackpot
Mega Millions holds drawings twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11 p.m. ET. The jackpot for Tuesday night’s drawing is $1.05 billion, after there were no winners for the $910 million jackpot on Friday.
This would be tied for the fourth-largest Mega Millions jackpot ever. The largest-ever Mega Millions jackpot was $1.537 billion, which was won by a South Carolina ticket holder in October 2018.
The largest ever multi-state draw jackpot won by a Massachusetts ticket-holder was $758.7 million for Powerball back in August 2017.
