Over sports betting launch weekend in Massachusetts, WynnBET became a paradise for college basketball bettors.

From March 10-12, 44% of all bets placed at WynnBET in Massachusetts were on college basketball conference tournament games, WynnBET communications specialist Travis Eldridge told PlayMA.

Massachusetts online sports betting launched March 10. That coincided with the height of college basketball tournament action. The final rounds of most major college conference tournaments all took place over MA launch weekend. That includes the Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, ACC, SEC and Big East tournaments.

Boston betting more on college basketball than NBA

At the WynnBET Sportsbook at Encore Boston Harbor, college basketball betting nearly doubled the handle of NBA betting over the weekend.

“Boston has developed a reputation for not being a huge college sports town,” Eldridge said. “But we’ve seen differently when it comes to betting.”

Eldridge also noted that Boston Celtics and Bruins betting has both been popular so far at WynnBET MA.

As of Wednesday morning, 86% of WynnBET’s NBA champion futures bets have been on the Celtics. For the NHL, 89% of Stanley Cup winner bets have been placed on the Bruins.

Those figures go hand in hand with what other Massachusetts online sportsbooks have reported to PlayMA.

BetMGM Massachusetts told PlayMA that 74.1% of its NBA Finals futures have been placed on the Celtics, compared to 12.5% across the country. And DraftKings Sportsbook MA said the Bruins and Celtics were its most bet-on teams over the course of launch weekend, with the Bruins outpacing the Celtics.

Caesars Sportsbook, Barstool Sportsbook and FanDuel also launched their sports betting apps in Massachusetts last Friday.

GeoComply, the technology company responsible for sportsbook geolocation services, said there were 8.1 million geotransactions in Massachusetts over launch weekend from 406,400 separate bettor accounts. That level of activity was the fifth-most in the US last weekend, behind only New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio.
