Betway has received its Massachusetts online sports betting license. It plans to launch its MA app in January 2024.

Those revelations came Tuesday morning during the open meeting of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. Executive Director Karen Wells said she had received the $1 million application fee from Digital Gaming Corporation, which owns Betway, and the formal application for the license.

MGC commissioners unanimously voted to approve Betway’s license. Ahead of that vote, Bruce Band, the Director of Sports Wagering, said Betway had informed him it planned to launch in the first quarter of 2024, in January.

Betway becomes 10th Massachusetts sports betting licensee

Betway is the 10th online platform to receive full approval from the MGC. The other nine:

  • DraftKings
  • FanDuel
  • BetMGM
  • Caesars Sportsbook
  • WynnBET
  • Barstool Sportsbook
  • Betr
  • Bally Bet
  • Fanatics Sportsbook

Bally Bet and Fanatics Sportsbook plan to launch in May, and Betr plans for late March or April. The six other apps are expected to go live on March 10, when MA online sports betting officially opens.

Background on Betway

A titan in the international sports gambling space, Betway has now secured licenses in nine US states as it continues its spread across the Atlantic Ocean. It also has licenses in Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

With a proposed January 2024 launch, Betway Massachusetts would go live in time for Super Bowl 58. It would also be available well in advance of March Madness. Essentially, Betway is forfeiting 2023 in Massachusetts in order to be prepared for a more successful 2024 in the state.

While there’s no way to know for sure what Betway’s welcome bonus in Massachusetts would be, we can speculate. Currently, in other US states where it’s live, Betway offers new customers up to $250 in bonus bets. It may need to sweeten that offer a bit next January in order to entice Massachusetts bettors who already have nearly a year of experience with other sportsbook apps.
