While the odds of turning a bet of $5 into hundreds of thousands of dollars remain low, it’s certainly possible. The story of a recent Schenectady, NY, progressive jackpot win proves that it can happen.
A man from Adams, Mass., put down $5 on a poker hand recently and came away with over a third of a million dollars. It’s something that many other poker players would love to have happen to them someday.
Details on the Schenectady progressive jackpot win
The man, identified only by a first name of Jeffrey, took a seat at a table offering Mississippi stud poker at Rivers Casino in Schenectady. After buying in with a $5 bet, he was dealt a 10 and a queen of diamonds.
That’s when things got exciting for Jeffrey. The dealer turned over a jack, king and ace of diamonds, giving Jeffrey a royal flush.
Not only did Jeffrey win the round with that hand, but he also cashed in on a progressive jackpot. The $352,778 prize is one of the largest since Rivers opened over two years ago.
Jeffrey placed subsequent wagers on the flop, turn and river cards at 500-to-1 odds. That gave him an additional $50,000. He wasn’t the only one to cash in on the good luck, however.
Lucky poker hand all around
Three other players who put down wagers on the progressive jackpot got an “envy bonus” of $5,000 each. Jeffrey’s good luck spread to others at the table, as well.
While Jeffrey said he had no immediate plans for his winnings, he should share some of that money with his wife. She gave him a new pineapple dress shirt for luck the day before he won the jackpot.
Whether it was the shirt or something else, Jeffrey’s luck at Rivers in Schenectady is unquestionable. Stories like his should act as an inspiration to poker players that not only can the games be fun but very lucrative as well.
