When Massachusetts online sports betting launched Friday, the two industry leaders were among those operators ready as the clock struck 10 a.m. to accept legal wagers for the first time.
And, according to a recent report, they’re among the most innovative sportsbooks in the industry.
FanDuel earned the title of “most innovative sportsbook” based on a new report from HPL Digital Sport. DraftKings came in at No. 3, with PointsBet sandwiched in between the two market giants. That means FanDuel and DraftKings, at least according to this report, are the most innovative sports betting apps in Massachusetts.
What did respondents say about FanDuel?
HPLDS surveyed “more than two-dozen” sports betting and gaming journalists from various publications from Jan. 12-23. It combined their answers with those of “over a half-dozen” industry consultants and analysts to create this report.
PlayMA is part of Catena Media. According to Michael Adorno, vice president of communications at HPLDS, “a number of Catena Media reporters took our survey.”
HPLDS asked respondents to list their top three most innovative sportsbooks and assigned a points system based on those answers. FanDuel, which runs FanDuel Massachusetts in the Bay State, ran away with it, taking first place with 55 points. DraftKings Sportsbook, which is DraftKings Massachusetts in MA, came in third at 20 points. PointsBet got 24 points.
“FanDuel has been the leader because they do well what was necessary these past few years in order to attract users – easy user experience (UX) overall and amazing promos,” one consultant said in the HPLDS study. “Once the promos tail off and other operators catch up and have just as good UX, they will lose some of this unique appeal. However, FanDuel does control a sizable part of the market and that won’t just go away overnight.”
Thanks to its ingenuity and commitment to improving its product, FanDuel holds more than 40% of the market share in mobile sports betting in the US. Now Massachusetts residents who love sports want to enjoy them even more will be able to use the app HPL Digital Sport says has an “easy user experience” and “amazing promos.”
What is HPLDS?
HPLDS produces its report, titled State of the Sportsbook, annually. HPLDS is an international sports marketing and brand awareness company. It has worked with the NFL, Rush Street Interactive and other clients in the industry.
FanDuel is one of six Massachusetts sportsbook apps that launched Friday, along with DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, WynnBET and Barstool Sports.
Some are expecting DraftKings, which was founded and is based in Boston, to compete closely with FanDuel for market share in Massachusetts. Sports betting is popular in the sports-crazed state. According to a survey conducted by PlayMA in early March, 51% of Massachusetts sports fans already were betting on sports before mobile sportsbooks launched.
