5 best things to do at MGM Springfield other than the sportsbook

With Massachusetts sports betting set to launch 10 a.m. on Jan. 31 at MGM Springfield and all retail locations in the state, MGM Springfield is about to get an influx of sports gamblers who may have never visited a casino before.

Boasting a spacious, full-service casino resort that will soon include sports betting windows, MGM Springfield is a popular spot in Western Massachusetts for those who enjoy slots and table games.

Like other properties under the MGM Resorts umbrella, the downtown Springfield location is much more than a casino and high-end hotel. It is a full-fledged entertainment venue offering a wide range of activities, including family-friendly ones.

If you’re planning a visit to MGM Springfield when its BetMGM Massachusetts Sportsbook opens, here is a list of interesting things to do other than sports wagering.

Play Slots, Table Games, and Poker

MGM Springfield offers more than 1,500 slot machines to play. That includes fan favorites Buffalo Ascension(which has 5,488 ways to win) and Coin Trio – Fortune Trails(a hold-and-spin slot where you can buy into bonuses). The casino adds new slot machines all the time, too, so you might see something new each time you visit.

In December, MGM Springfield gave away more than $11.1 million across over 4,300 slot jackpots.

There are also 100 table games, including Three Card Poker, Ultimate Texas Hold’em, Pontoon 21, Let It Ride, and Four Card Poker. MGM Springfield offers progressive jackpots for Royal 9 Baccarat, Bonus Spin Xtreme, and Super 4 Blackjack.

Finally, MGM Springfield also offers a 23-table poker room open from 10 a.m. to 3 a.m. daily.

Experience Fine Dining and Drink Delicious Cocktails

MGM Springfield is home to several eating venues, including an upscale steakhouse and a traditional Italian restaurant.

The Chandler Steakhouse is an opulent restaurant inside the historic Union Building, one of the landmarks transformed by MGM Springfield. It is an excellent spot for romantic meals and business dinners for those who want to impress clients. The restaurant is reminiscent of Las Vegas-style fine dining attractions with its luxurious interior of Greek-style columns, velvet-covered seating, rich wood-paneled walls, and formally dressed wait staff.

As its name indicates, the restaurant’s menu features expensive cuts of beef as well as seafood and truffle-based appetizers. Guests can also order from an extensive wine and spirits list. For those who want a more informal dining experience, bar seating is available.

According to MGM Springfield, Costa “will bring you back to Grandma’s kitchen.” The restaurant serves classic Italian American fare in a stylish dining room that loosely resembles a traditional brick oven. The casual yet elegant restaurant is also great for dates and family dinners. The menu includes a range of lasagna, spaghetti, pizza, seafood, and other Italian dishes. The drink menu lists Italian wines and beers.

Other places to eat at the casino include the South End Market food court, a coffee shop, and a Wahlburgers, the hamburger chain owned by the famous Wahlberg brothers.

In addition, MGM added a sports betting area to its TAP Sports Bar where fans can watch games, drink, and eat bar food.

Suppose you want to have a low-key evening drinking cocktails in a chic environment. In that case, the casino has several lounges for happy hour drinks, pre-dinner apéritifs, and socializing.

Enjoy Live Music

MGM Resorts has some of the best live music venues in the nation. MGM Springfield is no exception. The casino hosts live concerts and comedy shows at its Aria Ballroom, a comedy club, the MassMutual Center, and an outdoor plaza.

Locals and visitors can attend free concerts in the Aria Ballroom throughout the year. “Free Music Fridays” showcase tribute bands and begin at 7 p.m. weekly. It is a fun and free way to wind down after the work week with friends and family. Music lovers can also see paid concerts of famous groups in the ballroom. Beverages at Aria include beer, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks.

Located inside the refurbished Armory building, another historic gem renovated by the casino, the Roar! Comedy Club books nationally known stand-up comedians. The venue’s interior includes exposed brick from the building’s original structure and huge, sparkling chandeliers.

Take in a Movie

If you want to catch a movie, Regal MGM Springfield has seven auditoriums, luxury reclining seats, and technology for 3D-enhanced films. The in-house theater also has a full bar that serves beer, wine, and cocktails.

As a part of the Regal Cinemas hotel chain, moviegoers can redeem credits earned in the Regal Crown Club app from films seen at any location nationwide. Rewards include complimentary beverages, popcorn, and tickets. Guests can also purchase their tickets in the app.

Play Topgolf and Go Bowling

Sports-related fun at MGM Springfield includes Topgolf, bowling, and swimming in a rooftop pool. The Topgolf Swing Suite is a reservations-only venue designed for groups. It is an expansive suite with leather upholstered lounge seating, TVs, a bar, and food. The high-tech game simulators allow visitors to play virtual golf and other games, such as soccer and zombie dodgeball, in front of massive screens.

The casino’s TAP Sports Bar has a six-lane bowling alley for patrons. Small groups can play impromptu games. Large groups of over 25 can make reservations to play at the lanes.

Participate in the Mayflower Marathon

In 2022, MGM Springfield took over hosting one of the region’s biggest food drives, the Mayflower Marathon.

Previously, the event took place at the nearby Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. The three-day charity drive attracts donors from all over Western Massachusetts, who drop off non-perishable items and donate money outside South End Market.

MGM Springfield’s first time hosting the event was a huge success as donations hit a record high, with over $174,000 in donations collected during the live event. Residents who may never step inside the casino showed up to donate to a good cause.

Bonus: Attend Hall of Fame Weekend

MGM Springfield is conveniently located about a half mile from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. It hosts an annual enshrinement ceremony weekend in late summer that includes celebrity red-carpet events.

The casino is an official sponsor of the induction program.

Fans line up before the induction to watch stars like Michael Jordan and the Commonwealth’s homegrown star Rebecca Lobo arrive to celebrate their Hall of Fame peers during the nationally televised event.

MGM Rewards and Promotions

With the plethora of activities available at MGM Springfield year-round, you can always find something fun to do. The icing on the cake is that many of those activities are eligible for earning points or redemption in the MGM Rewards program. The points can be accumulated and redeemed at any MGM Resort in the country. You can also use those points in the BetMGM sports betting app.
