MGM Springfield is now accepting reservations.

Set to become the first true gaming resort in Massachusetts when it opens Aug. 24, 2018, MGM Springfield began taking reservations for rooms and suites July 2.

In a press release announcing the public can now make a reservation online or on the phone, MGM Springfield General Manager Alex Dixon said the grand opening will mark a special day in New England:

“August 24 will be a very special day when we finally open our doors and welcome everyone to enjoy the incredible experiences we’ve been planning. We’ve worked hard to curate a spectacular destination and build a hospitality team of 3,000 industry professionals to deliver unrivaled service.”

MGM Springfield’s grand opening

MGM announced in April that the $950 million MGM Springfield gaming resort will officially open Aug. 24.

It promises to be New England’s first integrated luxury resort and entertainment destination.

In fact, MGM Springfield is a two-million-square-foot development combining new construction with revived historic buildings on three city blocks in the heart of downtown Springfield.

The property will feature accommodations in a boutique-style five-story hotel with 252 rooms, including 16 suites. The decor is said to be inspired by the historic significance of the area. To that end, the rooms will feature direct views of Springfield’s history, including:

  • Historical building facades framing the windows
  • Reclaimed wood tables made from former Bliss Street trees in the Garden and Spa Suites
  • A custom chandelier made of vintage hats inspired by Dr. Seuss in the Presidential Suite

Room rates start at $219 and can be booked now by calling (413) 273-5000 or visiting the MGM Springfield website.

Massachusetts’ second commercial casino

MGM Springfield will open as Massachusetts’ second commercial casino. Penn National Gaming opened the Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville in 2015, becoming the first.

The casino at MGM Springfield will include:

  • 125,000-square-foot gaming floor
  • More than 2,550 slot machines
  • Approximately 120 gaming tables
  • Poker room
  • High-limit VIP gaming area

MGM Springfield will also feature the celebrated chef restaurants and A-list entertainment options that have become parent company MGM Resorts’ signature.

Entertainment will revolve around the MassMutual Center, an 8,000-seat concert venue that will be opened by Stevie Wonder on Saturday, Sept. 1.

MGM Springfield will also have:

  • Topgolf Swing Suite
  • Eight-screen luxury movie theater complex
  • Ten-lane bowling center

Plus, the property will include a spa and an 8,000-square-foot pool built on a terraced rooftop garden.

The property will also include approximately 55,000 square feet of retail space, including an open-air plaza in the mold of a classic New England town common. The plaza will feature an open-air marketplace and a seasonal outdoor ice rink.

Various food and beverage options will include:

  • Cal Mare by James Beard Award-winning Chef Michael Mina
  • Executive chef Meghan Gill‘s The Chandler Steak House
  • MGM’s signature TAP Sports Bar
  • South End Market off Main Street
  • Starbucks

Alcohol will be served until 4 a.m. on the casino floor after the Massachusetts Gaming Commission voted in favor of extending last call by two hours at MGM Springfield last month.

Passed by state lawmakers in 2011, the state’s Expanded Gaming Act also authorized the opening of a third commercial casino. The $2.4 billion Encore Boston Harbor (formerly Wynn Boston Harbor) will open in Everett in 2019.

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is also building The First Light Resort & Casino, a $1 billion Indian casino in Taunton. Plans are to open First Light this summer as well.
